RED CANYON ~ UTAH

Red Canyon is a recreational area near Bryce Canyon National Park. Many of the trails in Bryce are long and steep. Red Canyon's trails are shorter and more level for the hiker that doesn't want to spend much time looking at red sandstone landscapes.

Bicycle or Cargo Vehicle?

I spotted this bicycle in Salt Lake City, UT. It was being used as a sandwich delivery vehicle for a local sub-shop. The cargo bucket was very solid and secure. Upon inspection, it would make a great touring bicycle.

Eagles

Winter is always the best time to view eagles along the Mississippi River. Frozen water and lack of foliage on trees make these birds of prey easy to spot and fascinating to watch. These eagles were photographed by my friend Kama near Lock and Dam No. 14 just South of Le Claire, Iowa. Kama used her new Cannon EOS Rebel T1i camera for these photos.
The area was lousy with eagles on this chilly January day. There were 3 large trees standing side by side by side. At one point we counted 10 eagles perched in these 3 trees. Those 10 did not include the eagles flying over head and standing on the frozen Mississippi waiting for food to float by.

There are 60 species of eagles. Most of these live in Eurasia and Africa.

Bald and Golden eagles are the only species that live in North America.

Eagles are members of the bird family Accipitridae.

The above bird...a golden eagle or another kind of bird of prey?

Astico County Park ~ Dodge County ~ Wisconsin...January 2011

Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter...all are great seasons to visit Astico County Park.

The walking bridge stretches across the Crawfish River. During winter months the river transforms into a highway for snowmobiles.

See more photos of Astico County Park in an entry posted on October 3, 2010.

Companion

A bicycle can be a great companion.

This bike belongs to a little old lady in Salt Lake City. Four different times over a 3 day period I saw her zooming in and out of traffic. At first I thought she was on a bicycle. It wasn't until she halted at a stop-light that I heard the barely audible putter-putter-putter-putter of the small sachs engined that powered the "motor"-bike.

Check out my post titled "Motor"-bike from February 3, 2009 for photos of a home-made motor-bike.

Lake Kegonsa State Park ~ Wisconsin

Is there anything better than hiking in fresh powdery snow when the temperature is less than 10 degrees? Of course there is...but when you live in Wisconsin there isn't many options when you're suffering from a slight case of cabin fever. Lake Kegonsa State Park is located southeast of Madison near Stoughton. The park was established on August 12, 1962.

The park's 343 acres has oak woods, prairie, and wetlands.

Although they were difficult to find on this wintry day, the park has 5 miles of hiking trails.

Lake Kegonsa State Park is located on the northeast shore of Lake Kegonsa. Lake Kegonsa is 30 feet deep and covers 3209 acres. The lake is well known for its ice fishing opportunities.

Other winter activities include cross country skiing...and sledding!
