Duncan, AZ

Duncan is a small town in Eastern Arizona near the New Mexico border. Germaine's Emporium had everything a small town would need to survive...groceries, clothing, tools, guns, ammo, etc. Not to mention several old bicycles. I arrived in Duncan on Monday, May 16, 2011. On this day I pedaled 102.61 miles.

Welcome To...

This sign might as well have said "Welcome to the Middle of Nowhere". However, it was nice to see that Deming, NM was only 20 miles away which was my final destination for the day. This photo was taken on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at a little before 8AM. BIG RED and I pedaled 61.61 miles on this day.

All Aboard...Black Betty

Yellowstone National Park 2012: Mud Volcano Area

above, Black Dragon's Caldron ~ "This mudpot roared into existance in 1948, blowing trees out by the roots and forever changing this once quiet forested hillside. A park interpreter named the new feature for its resemblance to a darkly colored demon of the backwoods. For several decades it erupted in explosive 10-20 foot bursts of black mud. Over the years, it has moved 200 feet to the southeast and became relatively quiet. However, as change is constant in Yellowstone, the black dragon may one day roar back to life".

Notice the bison in the background taking a steam bath.

above, Mud Volcano ~ "In 1970, explorers stood in awe as Mud Volcano spewed mud into the treetops, shaking the ground with each eruption. Two years later it was a pool of bubbling, muddy water. Mud Volcano had blown itself apart".
above, Dragon's Mouth Spring ~ " An unknown park visitor named this feature around 1912 perhaps due to the water that frequesntly surged from the cave like the lashing of a dragon's tongue. Until 1994, this dramatic wave-like action often splashed water as far as the boardwalk. The rumbling sounds are caused by steam and other gases exploding through the water causing it to crash against the walls of the hidden caverns".

General Lee

The General Lee and Black Betty...a match made in Florala, AL. Photo taken June 25, 2012.

The name Florala refers to the town's location, adjacent to the Florida border: it is a portmanteau that combines the beginning letters in the words "Florida" and "Alabama".

Indian

"In my walk I saw a fresh track which I took to be an Indian from the shape of the foot as the toes turned in. I think it probable that this Indian spied our fires and came to a situation to view us from the top of a small knob..." ~ Capt. William Clark. August 3rd, 1805

Lockhart, TX

On May 3, 2011 I pedaled through Lockhart, TX. While in Lockhart I met Roy, a fellow cross country cyclist. On this day Roy was feeling under the weather and was taking the day off. For the remainder of the trip I emailed him almost daily informing him of route conditions, good places to eat, and reasonable lodging choices.

Not only did Roy appreciate my daily route updates but his mother Virginia was grateful for helping out her son. Virginia lives in La Jolla, a northern suburb of San Diego. She emailed me almost daily thanking me for helping her son. The day after finishing my ride I visited Virginia. To this day I exchange emails with Roy and Virginia.
