Perrot State Park is my favorite park in Wisconsin. The park is located near Trempealeau about 15 miles north of La Crosse. Every season is a good season to visit Perrot Park. Winter features great cross country skiing. Spring at the park gives one reason to begin to shed unwanted winter pounds by exploring the many trails that trace the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Summer offers countless bicycling opportunities the best being The Great River Trail that connect La Crosse to Trempealeau. The trail continues through Perrot State Park. And then there is the magnificent colors of Fall. Is there a better place in the Mid-west to see beautiful fall colors than along the Mississippi River?
Perrot State Park Facts:
- Native American tribes such as Archaic, Early Woodland, and Effigy Mound cultures were some of the earliest residents of this area.
- French fur trader Nicholas Perrot, for whom the park is named, spent the winter of 1686 here.
- A French Fort was built in 1731 on the site of Perrot's first camp.
- The park was established in 1918 when John Latsch donated 900 acres at the confluence of the Mississippi and Trempealeau Rivers.
- The park was officially dedicated in 1927.
