On July 5, 1867 General Grenville M. Dodge and his survey crew chose the current spot of Cheyenne as the point where the Union Pacific railroad would cross Crow Creek. By the time the railroad was finished the area boasted a population of over 4000. The city was named after the American Indian Cheyenne nation which was one of the most prominent of all the Great Plain tribes. As of 2010 census Cheyenne accounted for 59466 persons. The Cheyenne metropolitan area has a population of a little over 90000, making it the 354th most populated metropolitan area in the United States.
